What a difference the new pier makes!
Hav Vestlandia a Faeroe-island ship came on Saturday morningduring high tide. During the whole weekend Thorverk´s staff has been transporting all the algal meal from the norhtern tower to this ships hold.
We are delighted to announce that we have reached an agreement with Ásbjörn Ólafur Ásbjörnsson to become the next General Manager of Thorverk.
We all in Thorverk wish you enjoyable holidays around solstice this year.
These are registered the 20th of December 2024. That means that the sun will start to rise higher in the sky already tomorrow. But short days and long nights will reign until late March. In 2017 Thorverk gave reflective vests to all the children in the Reykholar school to help them to be more visible wherever they go during the winter. This gesture was repeated a few days ago. New vests for new children.
It takes a lot of effort to follow all protocol and still stay within the parameters of excellent produce and make profit that can also be taxed. This year only there have been 6 differnt auditors coming to Thorverk to check out quality, safety, organic process and products, anti-fraud efforts, ecological protection plans, staff safety and equality.
To make the new pier complete with electric lights, electirc cables, pipes for running cold and hot water as well as provision of seawater to wash with, the contractors are still working in and around the pier. Concrete floors are ready but for the time being the surroundings have been dug back and forth. Everything takes time. And a litle patience is a virtue in this case.
Concrete is brought to the pier in Reykholar from Borgarnes, about 150 km away. And there need to be many loads spread out to cover the whole pier.
Slowly and surely the harbour at Reykholar is becoming a modern infrastructure. Now the waterpipe is in place along the road. There also is an electric cable that goes all the way to the ships' dock.
When the wind takes it slowly out here, the employees of Thorverk get together in groups to plant our carbon binding young trees. The first ones were rooted in the North-East courner in the village near Álftaland and west of Grundará, about 266 plants.
We have an announcement out: Thorverk is looking for a Marine Resource Scientist
Many types of educational background may work, but a person who is willing to join the team and look after our marine resources, see new places and live amongst seaweed is welcome to apply. See the announcement
